Replika was created by Eugenia Kuyda, a Russian journalist who became an expert in artificial intelligence. Since 2016, Kuyda has been developing Replika, a chatbot based on a close friend who died in an accident in 2015. Kuyda gathered more than 10,000 text messages her friend had sent her, along with messages from mutual friends, to build a program that would think and respond like him.
In addition to Replika, Kuyda was also involved in creating Luka, a restaurant recommendation app that uses artificial intelligence to analyze previous conversations and build a better predictive model for understanding user preferences.
